The extensive presence of bogs leads to mosses and wool grass. In the Ardennes you can find beech forests and high-stemmed fir. Flanders is woody and the Flemish Kempen are mainly covered by heather. On the dunes along the coast, mostly grass grows and in the higher parts of Belgium certain submontane plants grow. Belgium has different kinds of landscapes with thus different kinds of vegetation. Most of the species are Atlantic and Central European species but some of the sub-Mediterranean flora, such as the palm tree and the Apennine rockrose, grow in Belgium. In total you can find more than 1300 species of vascular plants, over 5000 species of fungi and 700 species of leaf mosses. More than 20% is forested and the wide variety in habitats make it home to many species of birds, plants, and mammals.
